La Marzocco Linea Mini R in black

Linea Micra or Linea Mini R?

On paper, the Linea Micra and the Linea Mini R look like close relatives, and they are. Both are dual boilers, both come from La Marzocco's café machines (the Micra from the Linea Classic S, the Mini from the Linea Classic), and both connect to the same app. It's tempting to simply pick the one in your favourite colour. Use them side by side, though, and you start noticing different things.

The first is space. The Micra is properly compact and much lighter, the kind of machine that fits under a kitchen cabinet without a fight. The Mini R has more presence. In a Hong Kong flat that's not a small consideration, and it's often where the conversation starts.

The second is your mornings. The Micra is ready in about five minutes, which is hard to argue with before work. With the app, both machines can be scheduled, and you can choose whether a time slot includes the steam boiler or not: cappuccino in the morning, just espresso in the evening.

The third is the one coffee lovers tend to enjoy discovering. The Mini R has a second valve that lets it saturate the coffee gently before the shot begins, starting like a pre-brew and finishing like a true pre-infusion. You may notice it most with lighter roasts. The Mini R also has a shot timer built in and works with La Marzocco's Brew by Weight scale, so it can stop the shot for you at the weight you choose.

And then there's the feel of the paddle, the sound, the way each one sits on your counter. That part doesn't fit in a spec sheet, and it's usually what decides it.

Our honest advice is not to choose from a comparison like this one. Both machines are in the La Marzocco corner of our showroom in Tsuen Wan, switched on and ready. Bring your beans, pull a few shots on each, steam some milk, and see which one feels like yours. Book a visit on WhatsApp at +852 9476 9677, any day of the week.
