Dual Boiler or Heat Exchanger?

Most people who ask us whether they need a dual boiler or a heat exchanger are already leaning towards the dual boiler, because it sounds like more. Then we ask what their mornings look like, and quite often the answer changes.

A heat exchanger machine keeps one boiler at steam temperature and runs fresh water for your coffee through a pipe inside it. It's a clever, simple idea, and for decades it was how most good home machines worked. Its old weakness was that the temperature of your shot came from the steam boiler, so after a quiet hour the first coffee could run hot, and people learned to flush a little water first. Modern machines have largely fixed that. Lelit's MaraX, for example, watches two temperatures to avoid that overheating and the long wait between coffees.

A dual boiler gives the coffee its own boiler. You set the brew temperature and it stays there, independently of the steam. If you like to move between roasts, or you enjoy nudging the temperature by a degree to see what happens in the cup, that independence is worth a lot. And there's a side many people don't expect: on the days you only drink espresso, many of them let you switch the steam boiler off entirely. Some, like the Linea Micra and Linea Mini R, even let you schedule mornings with steam and evenings without.

So we usually start with you rather than the machine. If it's one or two milk drinks before work, a good heat exchanger like the Rocket Appartamento or the Lelit MaraX3 will make you very happy, and it's often more compact. If you make flat whites for the whole family, have friends round at the weekend, or you're the kind of person who keeps a notebook of recipes, a dual boiler such as the Lelit Bianca, the Elizabeth3 or the Rocket R58 TUNE will feel like it was made for you.

Neither is the grown-up choice. They're two good answers to two different mornings.

The easiest way to find yours is to try both. Come to our showroom in Tsuen Wan, make the drink you make every day on each kind of machine, and notice which one gets out of your way. We see people by appointment, seven days a week. Send us a WhatsApp at +852 9476 9677.
